Voiceover Artist Paul Coyte

Meet Voiceover Artist Paul Coyte

By | Blog, In-Store

As an opportunist with an innate love for radio, Paul Coyte has rubbed shoulders with some of the most recognisable faces in showbiz. The Sony Award winner is filled with stories, such as the time Meatloaf run amok in his studio, but underneath a wealth of success, he’s a big family man with an insatiable passion for football.

We took 5-minutes to get to know one of our VO Artists a little better, and this was the result:

ONBRAND: Where are you from?

PAUL: Buckhurst Hill, Essex.

How did you become a Voiceover Artist?

When I was young, I’d listen to Capital Radio, make tapes, make my own ads and then mix it all together, so since I was 13 I kind of wanted to be a DJ, and since the age of 21 I have been. The radio work quite naturally led to other voiceover opportunities.

What’s the most satisfying thing about your job?

The fact it doesn’t really feel like work. In other words, my work is my hobby.

What are your greatest passions outside of work?

My wife, my two kids, my dog – and Spurs!

Many fans know you as the voice of Spurs, don’ they? How did that come about?

By a very happy coincidence! I’ve been a Spurs fan since I was a boy, and one day when I asked my friend, David Jensen, if he knew anyone I might be able to get some hospitality tickets from at the Lane, he did. And I was asked if I’d be up for hosting in one of the lounges. That was 12-years ago now, and I’ve continued hosting, which includes interviewing ex-players, speaking to the fans at half-time, presenting Man of the Match awards – that type of stuff.

What do you most enjoy about the clients you represent?

I really do love people, especially those who are creative and fun. Having worked for clients such as Capital Gold, Virgin, BBC London, Jazz FM and Spurs, I’ve certainly had plenty of that.

How does it feel when a brand chooses you to be their voice?

Very proud. And it vindicates my decision not to go and work in a bank! My mum always wanted me to choose a steady profession, but it wouldn’t have given me the same highs.

What’s your favourite book or movie?

I’m a big fan of classic films. I love The Godfather movies, Lawrence of Arabia and The Ipcress File.

Can you tell us something that not everybody knows about you?

When I was at Virgin Radio, a friend of a friend worked for a big Hollywood celebrity. Feeling sure he was going to be fired, he made copies of every phone number in his employer’s Filofax and offered to sell it to me for $300. I paid it, and I made my way through each number live on air. By the time I finished, I’d interviewed people like Bo Derek, Dudley Moore, Barbra Streisand and Elizabeth Taylor – all live on British radio. It was amazing how receptive they were, and quite surprisingly, they rarely ever asked how I’d gotten their number!

We thank Paul for taking the time to speak to us, and look forward to putting his voice to suitable brands in the future.

Audio Options: The Consequence Of Choosing A Male Or Female Voice

Audio Options: The Consequence Of Choosing A Male Or Female Voice

By | Blog, In-Store, On The Phone

The decision as to whether a man or a woman should be used to front a particular brand might seem quite inconsequential to some, but the gender behind a voice helps to establish a number of unspoken factors, as well as prepare the listener for the type of message they’re about to receive.

When you think about the psychology of this, it kind of makes sense. To oversimplify, many of us learn discipline through our dad’s voice, and we often learn affection through the voice of our mother. Once an emotional connection is established, it often lasts our entire lives, so it can certainly be used to our advantage when advertising.

As such, the qualities generally associated to male and a female voices are as follows:

Specific qualities in a male voice: Specific qualities in a female voice:
  • Authoritative
  • Professional
  • Dependable
  • Warm
  • Welcoming
  • Reassuring

Although speaking in very simple terms, few people would disagree with the statements above, and depending on what type of brand you are, your messaging will more naturally lean towards using a male or a female.

Now let’s consider the effect that both a male and female voice has on the gender of your shoppers or callers:

A male customer listening to a female voice is likely to feel: On the flip-side, a female customer listening with a female voice is likely to feel:
  • Relaxed
  • Confident
  • Welcome
  • Reassured
  • Desired (it happens!)
  • Relaxed
  • Confident
  • Welcome
  • Reassured

As a rule, a female voice can cater for any task – whether offering general information, user directions, or dealing with sensitive issues – and instil trust in the customer. This is great should a consistent voice be needed for a variety of different needs.

Now let’s look at a male customer listening to a male voice, which is likely to make them feel: Similarly, a female customer listening to a male voice is likely to feel:
  • Alert
  • Confident
  • In good hands
  • Alert
  • Reassured
  • In good hands

It’s natural that the early part of our lives have made us consider a male voice to be more forceful and assertive, so we’ve become wired to expect directions, instructions and a request for action whenever we hear it. This makes a male voice great for winning the customers’ focus.

At OnBrand, we’re passionate about delivering messages that customers get the most out of, and we research all these little things to help you sound as good as you are.

For Valentine’s Day, we’ve recorded our shopping centre messages in both male and female voices for the very first time, allowing our customers to personalise their messaging with the click of a button.

Top 5 reasons for shoppers to visit your mall

Top 5 Reasons For Shoppers To Visit Your Mall

By | Blog, Digital, In-Store

The lifeblood of a shopping centre is its shoppers. Put simply, they are the eyes that see your bargains, the ears that hear your messages, and the cash flow that funds your existence.

Therefore, understanding what brings them to you is an integral part of not only ensuring they turn up in numbers, but also that they enjoy their experience enough to return.

So what is it that will get shoppers talking about you in a positive light, helping strengthen your reputation by word of mouth? As a company who analysis shopper behaviour, we ran a survey at the end of 2016 that allows us to highlight the 5 key reasons why people visit your centre.

1. Your location

There are some things you can control easily, and others you can’t. There’s no doubt that location wins a lot of shoppers’ custom due to convenience, but of course that doesn’t explain why some shoppers will trek half way across the country to visit certain centres whenever a big shopping spree is in order. Also, a recent survey showed us that more than a third of shoppers landing on your website are tourists passing through your location, so don’t be passive. Put yourself on the map and make sure you optimise your website so Google searches lead shoppers to you instead of the high street.

2. To socialise

There are countless reasons for friends to choose a shopping centre as their meeting spot. Maybe they work locally and have decided to catch up over lunch, or it’s a friend’s birthday and they’ve agreed to buy a gift together. It could be that a Saturday shopping trip is routine among a group of friends, or if you have a cinema in your centre, you may be seen as the hub for all local entertainment needs. Either way, these shoppers have come to you to spend, which is great news. But are you making the most of catering for friends in your mall? When you consider that 84% of shoppers are more likely to eat at your centre if they see good content on the dining options, we’d say it’s important to represent your eateries well online.

3. Out of habit / loyalty

A repeat customer is the greatest commodity to any business. To have shoppers visiting your mall through a sense of loyalty means you’re keeping them satisfied, and with habitual shoppers, you have the opportunity to win their custom for many years to come. Shoppers who know you by name are more likely to visit and mention your social media channels, so make sure you posts relevant news and offers often to encourage their further engagement. After all, 61% of shoppers are more likely to follow you on social media if you have a good website.

4. For convenience

Some people will run in to use your facilities, or maybe simply park their car before heading off elsewhere. There may also be people who duck in to evade the rain, or who’ll need to kill time before they meet someone. Customers who ‘drift’ through your mall without necessarily having a need or desire to buy anything represent the greatest opportunity to drive up your profits. Although they may be there by chance, the fact they’re in your centre allows you to influence their mood, which drives their behaviour. Playing good music can put/keep them in a positive mood, and radio messaging can inform them of exciting events and offers that are available in the centre

5. They love your retailers

If shoppers are your blood, then shops are your bones, and people will visit your centre primarily based on how attached they feel to the retailers. With online offers infiltrating their phones and click and collect becoming ever more popular, it makes a great deal of sense to invest in mobile content to motivate shoppers to visit physical stores. You can also piggyback off the reputation of your retailers just by having them in your centre.

Holidays Are Coming

Holidays Are Coming …

By | Blog, Digital, In-Store

Christmas is now just around the corner, so no doubt you have started shopping for those festive gifts, but what actually marks the start of the Christmas season?

For many clients that we work with, the festive season starts around the Christmas light switch on. A defining day in the launch of the Christmas season.

In marketing however, music has always played an important role in providing the mood of the brand, be it retail or otherwise. In the last few weeks a couple of people have said to us that the Coca Cola advert ‘Holidays are Coming’ marks the start of Christmas for them.

This well known Coca Cola advert serves as a great example of the power of sound and its link to memory and emotion.

Whether you love or hate Christmas songs there will be no chance of escaping the likes of Slade, Bing Crosby or Mariah Careys ‘All I want for Christmas’ whilst you are out buying gifts for all the family and struggling with your bags.

According to research from the music licensing organisations shoppers are much more likely to splash out on special gifts when they hear their favourite Christmas songs. Big retailers such as Coca Cola & in recent years, John Lewis have earned a reputation for creating memorable Christmas adverts and marketing campaigns designed to tug at the heart, and purse strings.

John Lewis snowman advert

In a survey of over 2000 consumers, the John Lewis ‘Snowman Journey’ advert was the favourite Christmas retail advert (from 2012) with its memorable version of Frankie Goes To Hollywood classic ‘The Power of Love’, sung by Gabrielle Aplin.

Christmas design and decoration has become part of the overall festive picture, but music has become equally important as a marketing tool for business owners. So, when all the chocolates are eaten and the decorations are back in the loft, don’t just turn off the music and forget about it until next year. Keep thinking about suitable music that your customers will associate with your brand and keep them engaged and loyal to your business. Just in the same way as the memory and emotion of festive music is associated with Christmas.

So what sounds mark the start of Christmas for you?

The value vs cost of audio messages

The value vs cost of audio messages

By | Blog, In-Store, On The Phone

What does a business do when they know they need something, but are finding it very hard to justify the cost? For example, we offer audio messaging to anybody that needs it – whether a shopping centre needs a radio announcement, or a company wished to refresh the automated messages on their telephone system – we can deliver great professional messages to suit their needs.

More often than not, the reason companies acquire a service is because they aren’t specialists in the area themselves. The problem is, all the so-called specialists claim they’re the best and use a bunch of jargon to tell you why, but how can you decide who to outsource your work to when you don’t really know what they’re talking about?

Brexit flashback, anyone?

Politics aside, we understand this plight all too well, and that’s why we don’t try to sell our products by putting other companies down, or by throwing a load of words at you that don’t mean anything. Instead, we focus on the problems you have, the solutions we offer, and the value of having your problem/s solved.

Here are the 5 steps we take to achieve your goals:

1. We listen

We don’t blindly claim to have the answers you need. Instead, we really take time to discover what your issues are in the first place. Only then can we begin to think of the services that can work for you.

2. We assess

When it comes to consumer behaviour or the customer journey, we like to do research to help us understand what works. We marry that information with the challenges you face and find ways of achieving your objectives.

3. We plan

You know what they say about failing to plan, right? Well, our ethos is all about building solid foundations so that our clients see long-term benefits as well as fixes in the short-term.

4. We’re transparent

When we do business, it’s incredibly important that people are clear with us, and so we treat everybody with the same level of respect. Transparency is key in setting out plans, expectations, costs and timelines, and so we’re up-front about everything we say and do.

5. We deliver

Our work history includes some wonderful brands, and not only do we deliver our product, but we always work to exceed expectations. After all, our main aim is to build long standing working relationships, and there’s only one way that can happen – by showing you the value in what we do.

How we add value

Spending money on external services can often be the cause of trepidation, but of course a business can only thrive when wise investments are made, so it’s always a catch-22 situation.

We always start by outlining expectations, because it’s vital our clients know what we’re doing and why. At OnBrand, each of our services either:

  • helps you make more money, or
  • saves you a great deal of time, which can be used to develop your business in other areas

Put simply, any good investment should give you a solid return, so if we could prove we’ve saved you time and money, and we can show you exactly how through our analytical systems, then it can only be viewed as a great investment, right?

That’s the true mark of good value.

Top 10 things callers hate to hear

Top 10 things callers hate to hear

By | Blog, On The Phone

The way that a brand communicates with its customers is integral to its ongoing success, yet so many companies drop the ball when it comes to the telephony experiences they offer.

Our experience tells us there are two glaring mistakes that brands make when mapping out their customer journeys – if they’ve taken the time to do it at all:

  1. They believe the customer experience starts from the moment the caller reaches an agent, as opposed to the moment they dial the number
  2. They fail to create scripts in line with the company’s Tone of Voice

To highlight some potential pitfalls, here is a list of the top 10 things that callers just hate to hear.

What you say   What your callers feel
Your call is important to us If it was, I wouldn’t be on hold
Sorry for the delay (or any apology)
I have a right to be annoyed
Press number 9 to . . . How many options?!
Beep-beep. Beep-beep. Beep-beep. What, not even a message?!
Please hold. [Cue elevator music] This music is terrible
To speak to an advisor, please
pre–[dead line]
You did not just cut me off!
For calls of this nature, visit our
website. Goodbye.
At least give me an option
Your call will be answered shortly You’ve said that 8 minutes ago
Jargon, jargon, jargon. Blah, blah, blah.
We have exceptionally high call volumes Then hire more staff

A successful telephone journey is one that is short and easy to understand. It should lead the caller to where they need to go on the first attempt, and put them in the best possible frame of mind when the time comes to connect with your agent. Should any of this fall down, then you can be sure to expect some very unhappy callers.

The truth is, nobody likes being on hold, but sometimes it’s necessary. On hold times will always be forgiven, though, providing you can show you have the callers’ best interest at heart.

5 tips for brand survival this Christmas

5 tips for brand survival this Christmas

By | Blog, In-Store, On The Phone

As wonderful a time as Christmas can be, the increased interest from shoppers and callers does have the potential to negatively impact upon a brand’s reputation.

To make sure you’re not one of them, ask yourself these 5 questions for festive survival – whether your business is done in a mall or over the phone:

1. Have I got into the Christmas spirit?

Let your website reflect your shoppers’ excitement with seasonal banners and updated festive logos to portray the feel good factor inside of yourself. Are there great offers available to customers? Put on a festive show to let the whole world know!

2. Have I got the atmosphere right?

Music is an incredibly subjective art form, but Christmas is one of the very few times where a plethora of songs are universally loved by all. Therefore, make sure to treat your customers to songs that will make them excited – on the phone and in store.

3. Have I updated my trading hours?

If your operational hours are due to change over the holidays, it’s vital for you to make the details readily available. A short PA announcement or IVR message embedded into your telephony can do just the trick.

4. Am I promoting special events as well as I can?

It’s always such a shame when a well-planned event is poorly attended, but with audio messages raising awareness to 100% of shoppers in the mall, why not create messages for the build-up to key events? Likewise with your telephony – if you’re running a competition, or doing something special for Christmas, use on-hold times to let your callers know.

5. Have I planned for contingencies?

Do you historically need to close near Christmas due to bad weather conditions? You can use this knowledge to your advantage by recording an automated message telling your customers just that. Then, should the worst should happen again, you’ll be fully prepared for it.

Get to the point where you can answer yes to all the above, then you’re sure to have a very merry Christmas indeed.

Billy Ocean

Join up your campaign with shopping centre radio

By | Blog, In-Store

Running a campaign or any kind takes a lot of time and energy, and there’s nothing more heart-breaking than a great campaign going unnoticed because nobody knew about it.

So when the Sovereign Centre contacted us asking for ways to shout about their giveaway, where shoppers could win tickets to see Billy Ocean, we gave them a quick fix at a rapid turnaround.

How?

We quickly scripted a radio message that raised awareness of the competition, letting 100% of the shoppers in their mall know they had to visit the centre’s Facebook page to enter. This was followed by one of Billy Ocean’s finest tracks, putting shoppers in the mood to enter.

The real beauty of radio messaging is that once the message is recorded, the centre can schedule it to play as frequently as they want, and at specific times of the day to capture the greatest footfall.

So if you’re planning a campaign, sayhello@onbrandgroup.co.uk or call us on 03333 22 00 22 to find out how we can maximise the impact in your mall.

Can Shoppers Find Your Offers?

By | Blog, Digital

Everybody loves an offer, so it goes without saying that a shopping centre’s website and social media channels are great places to find the best deals coming up . . . right?

Wrong.

In a recent study, we analysed the digital channels of nearly 400 British shopping centres to see how visible their offers were. We rated these centres, awarding scores between 1 and 5 on the efficiency, quality and quantity of their offers, and the results were definitely a little surprising.

As a rule, the more offers customers see, the more engaged they feel, and the more connected they become to the brand. Yet an incredible 31% of shopping centres in the UK didn’t promote a single offer. 15% of centres ran between 1-4 offers, and only 32% had 5 offers or more visible to their customers.

And the numbers are only part of the problem.

Equally as detrimental as running no offers at all is running them badly, which in itself can lead to a whole host of problems. From our findings, a number of shopping centres had:

  • Uninspiring content, turning shoppers off
  • Expired offers, revealing the content is unreliable
  • Duplicated content, which is penalised by Google
  • Mismatched information between their website and social media channels
  • Offers pages that didn’t load, displaying a lack of care for the centre’s customers and retailers

We understand how hard it is to get offers right when there’s so little spare time in your day

Because of these issues, which presented themselves repeatedly, there were 26% of shopping centre websites that we weren’t able to award a score at all.

So what does this mean for the state of offers in the UK?

Well, the way we see it, the statistics pose a great opportunity. We understand how hard it is to get offers right when there’s so little spare time in your day, and our solution was to create a tool that ensures all of your retailers’ latest offers feed into your digital channels – either automatically or manually – at the click of a button.

What does OnBrand Offers provide you? We’re glad you asked.

1. Content
Pick and choose from our suggested feed or post your own.

2. Technology
Platform that allows you to schedule and post to multiple channels in one action.

3. Data
Analytics to monitor reach and performance at the click of a button.

In order to show you how much of an impact our Offers product could have on your centre, we’re willing to let you trial it for a period of 14 days – absolutely free!
