Influencer Marketing: Are We No Longer Under The Influence?

By | Blog, Digital

Influencer marketing can be a beautiful thing. Researched and utilised correctly, you have paid for brand advocates who rave about your brand, furthering your reach and consideration, with a whole new audience. But in an overpopulated market, are influencers still trusted and more importantly believed? OnBrand’s Rachel Weinberger talks influencer marketing and whether it’s still a worthwhile part of your marketing strategy.

The Beginning Of Influencer Marketing

The role of an influencer is nothing new. Before celebrities and others in the public eye began endorsing products, queens and kings of the 17th and 18th centuries were the valued voices of their time.

Fast forward to the late 2000’s and the rise of social media, many were realising that with a blog or YouTube channel, you no longer needed to be a celebrity to gain a following and be influential. Drawn by authentic content and real, like-minded people who were more relatable than the unattainable celebrities that filled our screens, social media influencers were growing and in high demand.

If you’re looking to enhance your brand with influencer marketing, consider our top tips to ensure it’s the right strategy for you.

People Buy From People

With more resources, many head online to research their purchases and find out if it’s worth their time and money. Influencers create content that feeds the need of try before you buy, reviewing products and taking word-of-mouth marketing online.

Brands have realised the potential of collaborating with people their audience relate with and understand. It’s made brands appear more down-to-earth and likeable if endorsed by the right influencer. Influencers have bridged the gap and have made brands feel more honest and real. As we’ve said previously, people buy from people!

OnBrand top tip: Research who you want to work with to ensure they are the correct fit for your brand and who you want to target. Having a large following won’t ensure you’re reaching the right people or achieving your marketing goals.

(Don’t) Fake It Until You Make It

What was once deemed a novelty, is now an over saturated market and a much sought-after career path. A 2019 survey found that 17% of 11–16-year old’s want to become a social media influencer when they grow up.

It’s no surprise that with so many influencers emerging, what was once perceived as real content, can come across as quite the opposite.

Buying followers and going on holiday during the COVID-19 pandemic are just a few of the media storms that have hit influencers. This has had a huge impact on these once seemingly authentic content creators and the brands they promote. New laws mean all paid advertising must be marked with ‘AD’ – consumers are savvier than ever to paid advertising.

OnBrand top tip: Ensure anyone representing or promoting your brand aligns with your core values. Remember, influencers are the face of your brand. It needs to feel authentic, or consumers will feel mislead.

Create Clear Goals & Expectations

Like any strategy, it will only work if you are clear on what you want and how you want it to work. Influencer marketing can be costly, especially if you’re looking to work with an influencer with a large following. Consider your needs and what your main objectives are. Work out an agreement that suits both parties and is in line with each parties’ expectations.

OnBrand top tip: Consider nano or micro-influencers to target more niche audiences and for more authentic content.

3 bits of marketing advice to ignore

3 Bits Of Post-Pandemic Marketing Advice To IGNORE

By | Blog, Digital

The pandemic has changed marketing forever, but it’s more about slight shifts rather than wholesale change. Here’s OnBrand’s Tom Roberts with the top 3 bits of post-pandemic marketing advice to ignore right now.

EVERYTHING Is Digital Forever – Ignore

Really? Everything? This simply is not true and a top contender for post-pandemic marketing advice to ignore. It’s also the most vacuous piece of marketing advice out there. It’s very true that during lockdown the dominant places of interaction between brands and consumers was online, but real-life is coming back.

I spent a great proportion of last year working from home and interacting with colleagues on Zoom, but since joining OnBrand I’ve been in the office every day interacting with my colleagues and our customers.

Actually what has happened is, because digital interaction was one of the only ways we could interact, using digital services to interact has been normalised. People feel more comfortable in the digital landscape, and they don’t mind brands interrupting their social media journeys with comms.

This means that it’s wise to get your digital comms and shopfront sorted out, but don’t neglect real-life interactions – as the world opens up further, I’d hazard a guess that digital interactions may revert to pre-pandemic numbers through 2022.

Find New Customers, Don’t Worry About The Old Ones – Definitely Ignore

Again, what on Earth does this mean? Neglect the people who trust, love and buy from you already in favour of courting strangers? You could do that, but the pandemic has given you the best opportunity to communicate with and nurture your customers in a way you’ve never had – you literally had a captive audience (which isn’t meant to be a joke).

To come out of the pandemic with a bold new business strategy is right, but you need a customer journey pipeline for your current customers. Your CRM system could be feeding current and past customers with new offers, or free bits of interesting content that make them feel valued.

Don’t believe anyone who tells you the post-pandemic focus of your business should solely be on new business. For us, we’re taking the opportunity to engage with our clients to help them work out how best to communicate with customers old and new.

Besides, we all know the best type of business is repeat business – so, foster repeat business at the same time as prospecting for new business.

Ramp Up Your Digital Ad Spend Over Everything Else – Ignore, Ignore, Ignore

Sure thing. Smashing advice, I don’t think. The brands that lose trust first are the ones who ramp up their digital ad spend and neglect having conversations with their customers in the digital sphere. Digital ads work, but they work best as part of an integrated marketing campaign – they’re the bit that extends your reach to new audiences.

Treat digital ads as the silver bullet and you’ll quickly fall foul. Instead, invest in search engine optimisation of your site, build up your site’s evergreen content stash, refine your web copy, plan your social campaigns, start conversations – the pay off on any one of the above activities is absolutely on par with a successful paid ad campaign.

So, put more money behind your ad spend, if they’re working and not costing you too much to bring in new leads. But if you’re ramping up spend because that’s what people are saying you SHOULD do without providing alternatives or advising an integrated approach, it will be money wasted.

And in the post-pandemic world, customers will be making every penny count. Make sure you do too.

Build your own website and stop relying on third-party sites

Build Your Own Website, Protect Your Business

By | Blog

What will happen to your business if the third-party platforms (like eBay, Etsy or Facebook Marketplace) you rely on are taken away? Build your own website and remove the impact this could have on your business. In this week’s blog, OnBrand’s Michael Higgins explains why he believes owning the website your business relies on could be the smartest thing you ever do.

When OnlyFans banned adult content on their site, businesses using the site were so concerned with the impact it would have on their earnings, they fought back. Luckily for the users, OnlyFans rowed back the decision… which was a PR nightmare for them.

The whole debacle showed how dangerous it is to base your income entirely on a third-party site. Your income will be wiped out overnight if the site changes its guidelines.

When You Don’t Own It

The same situation can arise if you’re a business that sells on one site – think eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or Etsy. It can also happen if you’re only using one particular social media platform to grow awareness of your brand.

If the social media platform ‘does a MySpace’ and disappears, or ceases to be widely used, you’re in trouble.

If you run a digital business, it is therefore a big benefit to own the platform responsible for bringing in the money. That’s why it is always better to have your own website rather than rely on a third-party web builder – if their systems go down, so do yours.

Build Your Own Website

Okay, so I’ve made my argument, but the evidence speaks for itself. Owning your own website has 3 key benefits:

  • You can be confident that the platform you use to bring in money won’t suddenly disappear.
  • No need to pay commission to anyone else on the sales that you make.
  • Design your site to look however you want it to look.

That last point is critical, and simply not possible with other platforms like OnlyFans, Facebook or similar sites.

Final Thoughts

The popularity and notoriety of third-party sites CAN help you to reach more people more easily, but you remain at their mercy. If you are savvy enough to grow a loyal following through social media platforms and ads, you’ll be talking to an engaged audience who love you.

From there, you simply direct them to your website and convert that audience into customers on a platform you own. I honestly can’t think of a better business situation than that!

How To Use Customer Reviews (Properly)

By | Blog

People buy from people – whether that’s directly or through recommendations. If your business isn’t using customer reviews in your marketing, you’re missing a trick. OnBrand answers the top 5 questions on how to use them properly.

Customer reviews are strong marketing assets and if you’re not using them, you should be. We use our case studies all the time, because we’re proud of what we do & how we’ve helped our customers.

Good reviews are always the best (obviously!), but negative reviews give you insights into where your business is frustrating your customers. So, they’re useful too in their own way.

However, we’re only interested in using the good reviews for marketing purposes. So, I’m going to answer the top 5 questions businesses are asking Google right now about how to use customer reviews.

What Is A Customer Review?

A customer review is a requested or unrequested review of your company, its products and services.

They will mainly be unprompted customer-generated reviews (for example, Trustpilot or Google reviews) and requested reviews (those that you as a business generate by proactively asking for them).

OnBrand Top Tip: Customer reviews come in many different formats – including audio, video & written – and some become detailed case studies which a business will use as a sales tool to convert new customers.

Why Are They So Important?

Customer reviews are so important because they make your business look great when used properly.

One customer telling another customer that your products/services are amazing is the best free marketing your money can’t buy.

OnBrand Top Tip: Make giving a review easy for your customers is key. Join a platform like Trustpilot and advertise you’re a member on your website – then, let your customers do the rest. The double whammy of a good rating on an independent reviews site & the simple fact it’s not you telling people you’re great means maximum credibility.

Can I Ask For Customer Reviews?

Yes, you can ask for customer reviews. In fact, your CRM email cycle should factor in asking customers for reviews somewhere in the journey.

We’d recommend post-sale, for the obvious reason that asking any time before that would be weird.

OnBrand Top Tip: If your CRM email cycle has a quote confirmation email, or post-initial contact email, put a case study on that email or the email that follows up that one. You might just find a well-timed customer review that makes you look amazing is what tips them over the line.

How To Write Customer Reviews

The best way to write a customer review is to let a customer write it for you. Unprompted positive words will always be the most valuable reviews you get.

However, if you ask a customer for a review, offering to help them write it based on an email they’ve sent you or asking them questions over the phone will still offer value.

The format of the review – and whether or not you decide to turn it into a case study – will also affect how the review is written.

OnBrand Top Tip: If you’re writing a case study, make sure you scene-set by presenting the customer’s problems and ‘before’ situation. Then cover how your business solved the problems and the impact you’ve had on your customer. This format will tell a better story.

How To Use Them

You should use customer reviews on every channel your business communicates with customers.

They should be pushed on social media, used as sale-closing conversion tools, sent to potential customers in your CRM journey, and they should be easy to find on your website.

OnBrand Top Tip: Pick a great quote from a customer, turn that into a cool-looking social media post using Canva and post it. Simple as.

Marketing Maths: How To Create Winning Content

By | Blog

We spend enough time consuming content to know what good looks like. So, making it should be easy, right? Here’s OnBrand’s Tom Roberts to explain the marketing maths you need to have behind every piece of great content and how you can put it into practice today.

First, I’ll clarify that when I say “content” I mean everything. That includes blogs, videos, your social media posts and your on-site copy. Because everything starts with written words! Businesses want to create winning content, but I’m surprised so many miss the mark.

However, creating it can be boiled down to some simple marketing maths.

Brand Personality + Answering Customer Questions = Winning Content

That’s it. Blog done. Best of luck!

I’m kidding, of course. But it really is that simple. Too many businesses create some content because it’s something THEY want to do. Instead, they should be thinking about how it will help their customers.

Maybe it’s just me, but if your business has customers, they must come first. If more of your output is all about you, then what’s in it for your customers?

Find Your Brand Personality

This isn’t just about your branding (although it plays its part), it’s about finding the very fabric of your business so you can translate that into its voice.

Is it just you running the show? Then your own voice is the natural tone for your output. If you’re part of a bigger company, defining how you want the business to be perceived will dictate the personality & tone.

Once you decide how you want to sound, you’ve got your brand personality. This is what needs to come across in every bit of content you create from now on.

Answering Customer Needs

What’s the name of the biggest search engine on the planet? Google. Where do more people ask questions about products, services and life advice than anything else on the planet? Google. Therefore, you must answer the questions your customers are asking in places that can be found by Google.

If you can create useful things that help your customers achieve their goals – a FAQs page on your website, or engaging explainer videos on YouTube – you’ve fought half the battle. Then, getting that in front of your customers on social media is the battle won.

Create Winning Content

Combine those two elements of the Marketing Maths equation together, and you’ll be creating content that is not only useful to your customers, but also recognisably yours.

Standing out from the crowd is all about doing things differently, and what could be more different than your brand’s personality? That’s why injecting your brand’s personality into everything you create is the key to making winning content.

4 Things Innocent Do AMAZINGLY On Instagram (& So Can You)

By | Blog

Innocent know that Instagram can increase sales and generate loyal brand advocates who enjoy engaging with their content. OnBrand’s Rachel Weinberger tells us why she thinks Innocent keeps nailing Instagram and explains how you can do the same.

Innocent are best known for their healthy drinks and brilliant social media strategy. Cutting through the noise and creating your own, distinct space in a very populated market is no easy feat – but Innocent’s distinct tone of voice and hilarious content has helped them grow a legion of brand advocates who love to engage with them.

It’s the kind of magic you wish you could bottle – that’s why I’m picking their social media best practice apart, so you can have a go at using these tried and tested tactics.

Start Conversations That Interest Your Audience

Innocent’s content often uses trending topics, most recently the Euros and Pancake Day. Innocent uses these trends to their advantage by tapping into the minds of their consumers and creating reactive content that’s engaging and relevant. Understanding your audience and creating content that resonates with them – but still fits your brand values – is key.

Innocent may not be the first brand that springs to mind when thinking of the Euros or Pancake Day, but their witty and dry content makes them hard to ignore and forget. What do smoothies have to do with the Euros or Pancake Day? Nothing. But Innocent being at the centre of these conversations simply means more exposure for their brand.

Put Your Team In The Spotlight

Innocent regularly introduces their team on their social media channels through the creation of unique stories or work accolades. Innocent’s workplace culture is unique and the way they put it front and centre on social media gives their followers a fun peek into the goings on at Fruit Towers. Being able to lean into their work culture so effectively really helps them stand out among drinks brands.

Create Shareable Content Your Audience Will Love

Innocent creates humorous, colourful assets to go with their copy, which grab attention in the feed and always look distinctly ‘Innocent’ – even when they do out-of-brand things like changing fonts, packaging or even advertising fake products that Innocent would never produce. In their mind, it’s all great brand exposure.

They’re also well versed in using Instagram’s ‘Highlights’ and ‘Story’ functions. Highlights are often the first impression users will get of a person or brand’s page – they can really bring your brand to life and (pro tip) let you utilise story content for more than 24 hours. Innocent’s stories are all about creating shareable content which they know their followers will interact with and reshare. The content is suitable for all ages and, again, reiterates the fun-loving playful nature of the brand.

Use Your Brand’s Influence For Good

Innocent are so good at using their influence to raise awareness of lesser-known days of interest, such as Pride Disability Month. This is a great way to use their following for good, but also to highlight their brand values. By celebrating these occasions they’re able to do more than tap in to what’s trending – they’re able to showcase another way they do things differently and promote wide-ranging inclusivity. This attitude ties perfectly into them being legally registered as a B Corporation – another feather in their cap that boosts brand credibility and trust.

So there you go, four key ways Innocent Smoothies smash it on Instagram. Check out their Instagram profile to see more.
