OnBrand grows The Brewery’s social media presence by over 500%

By | Case Study, Social

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again. Social media isn’t all # and emojis. It’s a game of strategy, planning and some #surprises. Yep, there’s some experimental stuff in there too that allows us to test the water…

While we previously gave you some insight into how to build a successful shopping centre social media strategy, as they say, the proof is in the pudding.

That’s why we wanted to blow our trumpets, because, well, we’re pretty proud of this one… hold on to the edge of your seats guys, here’s how we grew The Brewery’s social media reach from an average of 9k reach to 46k a month. That’s an increase of over 500%!

How? Because we’re #experts, that’s how. Here’s a few steps on how we nailed it.

Step one: The beginnings

We were delighted to start working with The Brewery in October last year. At the time, it had a lot to offer. However, it seemed the way they were doing it, fell on deaf ears. The Facebook audience just didn’t respond. Tough crowd eh?

Step 2: Warming up the crowd

One of the keys to a great social strategy is creating something that will initially act as a hook to bring in the audience. Once there’s a pool, you can communicate with them and keep them on-board. Yep, it’s a bit cheeky, but like a pack of Pringles, once you’re committed, you can’t stop. And that’s how we decided to play it. We know everyone likes a freebie and a little competition. So, we got out and about in the centre and got not one, but two great competitions within the first couple of weeks of working with the scheme. And then we set about with the bait – getting them live on Facebook. Of course, we didn’t get hundreds of thousands of entries right away – unfortunately, it’s not how social works. However, the likes, shares and comments, pushed up the engagement and began altering the Facebook algorithm. Ok, so this is a bit complicated, so to put it simply, this meant our posts began appearing more on feeds, attracting more users and boosting our likes.

Step 3: Building on the foundations

Once we had drawn in the audience, the trick was to keep the momentum going. And this is where we had to really start to think about our content plan. We know discounts, competitions and events always do well. However, it’s not a sustainable strategy, especially if these mechanisms aren’t always available. So, we’re not afraid to admit, we created content around a trial and error approach – some posts might work better than others, but that’s what informs us and helps us to work out what comes next!

Step 4: I’m a celebrity, get me in here…

First up on our list? Celebrity get the looks. But did it work? To a point, we got some comments, but it wasn’t enough for us to be happy about (we’re tough on ourselves you see).

So, we decided to take it a step further, mixing topical awareness days and posting the centre’s and other celebrity takes on this. Based on feedback from shoppers, we decided to target areas such as  mental health and body image. The result? Jackpot! One such post featuring Stacey Solomon talking about post-natal depression, hit the 3k engagement mark – way over the average of a normal post. Other posts following the same format also performed well. As a result, we decided to use this as one of the strands. Content strategy 1 – done!

Step 5: Keep it local

Everyone likes to know what’s going on in their community, and, as a community scheme, it was a no brainer that we should use the scheme’s social media to build on this. We started the trial by sharing articles from local papers, with issues that we knew would be of interest to the people visiting the centre. This included bus routes that were being diverted and, news of locals who had won awards or were doing something for charity. And we couldn’t have been happier with the results. These posts did amazingly well in terms of comments, shares and likes, not only building the following, but also cementing The Brewery’s standing as a community led centre.

Step 6: Love your retailers and local heroes

So, what do you say about your retailers apart from advertising their offers? Well, quite a bit actually. Yep, we took it one step further. A new store launch took on a whole new strategy, with teasers featuring pictures of the empty shell, to works in progress and the final opening. And once again, this did very well. But we didn’t stop there. On visits we ensured we took pictures of those who actually worked in these stores and gave them a presence on social media. This again gave a real-life feel to the scheme and added a personal touch, which made the centre stand out amongst its local competitors.

Tom Stobbart, Centre Manager said:

‘We’re so pleased with the social media growth and couldn’t have asked for more. OnBrand really took the time and initiative to think up a local community led strategy and it exceeded our expectations. We can’t wait to see our followers and engagement grow further in the future.’

*Blush.

How to build a successful shopping centre social media strategy

By | Case Study, Social

Social media. It’s easy right? You just take some pics, slap on a hashtag and wait for the likes to pour in. If you’re a celebrity or influencer, then this method may work. But, there’s a lot more that goes into a social media strategy. It takes #sweat, #tears and lots of #research – ok we may have lied a bit about the first two. But we’re definitely being honest when it comes to the last – because knowing your tenants, their customers and their interests are key to growing engagement through successful social media.

So where do you start when creating your social media campaign? Get ready to be inspired – it’s not what you may think…

Don’t take things at face value

We work with a wide range of shopping centres, and at first glance, you’d think mostly posting about fashion would be a given in boosting that engagement and reach. Right? Wrong. Because there’s more to creating popular content than meets the eye.

Shopping centres come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.  Some offer a broad range of high profile retailers, while others are more community based, often working with independent retailers or promoting events around empty retail units. And when it comes to finding the right message, it’s definitely not a one size fits all strategy.

So, in our view, the real way to get your social followers talking, and your engagement reach up, is to think out of the box and write a range of content that helps make you stand out from your competitors.

For each and every one of our clients, we put together a strategy where we explore a diverse selection of topics.  For some that might include celebrity, fashion and food and for others it’s all about community content.  That way we can see what resonates best with their local followers.

Let’s break it down a bit more for you with some examples.

Ring in the retailers

Of course, it’s important to shout about new stores and promote what’s going on in each one. But that isn’t always enough. Let’s take the example of The Brewery in Romford. A centre with a range of stores such as TKMAXX, Next and Gap outlets and a range of restaurants, its previous strategy had been mainly to promote what was on offer at each place. However, this wasn’t working brilliantly for engagement.

We looked at the demographic and researched what The Brewery meant to them.  Instead of posting just about store openings, we decided to take a different approach and add a personal touch. We went to meet all the retailers, taking time at the centre to turn a normal post into something more personal.

For example, shouting about a new store manager with a picture that we’d taken.  Taking product photography inside stores with catchy calls to action, as well as liaising with their head offices to find out about any latest promotions, staff changes and store refurbs.  This ‘insider’ strategy worked well, with follower and engagement figures rising significantly.

And while we can’t always measure the direct impact of social media on store footfall, our experience is that by creating brand relationships, coupled with the latest store information (delivered via our dynamic  ‘Offers’ feed which pulls through store discounts onto web and social media platforms) we can deliver a joined-up strategy that works.

Community, community, community

community event

Whilst some of our clients already have a range of content or scheduled events that help us build their social media strategy, others need far more research and a plan in place that differs from just promoting their retailers’ offerings.

In our research, a key focus is often the community, and how a shopping centre or business can support their local environment.  We used this strategy to enhance their social media: photos of charity collectors in the building, mentioning centre staff and store managers who had gone above and beyond, and, of course, promoting external events around the area, have all gained high engagement.

We’ve also found talking about local human stories have done well. Of course, it may not result in immediate footfall, but this type of strategy is a long-term push. It means more followers who see the centre as the source of good quality informative local content. The more association to them means a better advocacy and loyalty, thus converting to shopper visits and higher visibility of all content.

Furthermore, the more of a community reputation there is, the better it stands out from a competitor in a small radius with the same offerings, thus increasing the footfall moving forward. One great example of this type of move is The Baytree Shopping Centre. Small, with empty retail units, this scheme needed a boost in social. We took all its activities, such as growing vegetables in their staff garden, and tied this in with awareness days to bring a community spirit to life. And their engagement grew too!

Boosting basics

Some social media strategies are built on a steady amount of boosting in a bid to raise awareness and numbers. And that’s all fine and dandy when you’re working with clients who have a great budget.

However, we believe that this method doesn’t always work and would rather build an organic audience with a robust and engaging strategy. That’s why we choose only to put money behind a one-off event or important piece of information. This ensures that the right content is in front of the right people, and if we’re boosting an event, encourages footfall. Of course, the boost reach means that organic traffic grows too.

And we could go on, from talking more about competitions to sustainability strategies, but we don’t want to give all our secrets away! Like what you’ve read and want to know how we can improve your social strategy? Drop us a line. We love social and building success stories from it.

One Great Day balloons

How we used our magic to host three events in four weeks…

By | Case Study, Events

We like to keep busy – it keeps us on our toes. And we’re pretty unflappable when it comes to planning shopping centre events. So, even when The Brewery asked us to come up with three events in four weeks to engage the community and create some fun for families, it was a wish come true – although our second wish may have been not to have such a tight deadline 😊

Building up the Brewery’s events

The Brewery hadn’t done an event for a while, so, it decided to create three in four weeks… what do they say about buses?

And three events called for special thinking.

We wanted to make sure that any event we did got the whole family involved. The Brewery has a great range of retailers and leisure facilities and it just so happened that one of the weekends we had down was the launch of the much-anticipated Aladdin film. As Vue Cinemas were situated in the centre, we thought this would be great tie in. GENIE-US right?

We decided to host a whole weekend of Aladdin themed workshops including genie mask making, lantern making and even hired an Aladdin stilt walker to welcome our film and Disney fans.

But the fun didn’t end there! No Siree…because the next weekend we had to do it all again. This time we decided to help build kids’ creativity and host a BRICKLIVE themed weekend. Featuring a brick pit, graffiti walls and tables, we helped (well, watched) as the professionals built character masks. Our account director even got in on the action, encouraging little ones to build a tower higher than her…

Did it work? Take a look at the video

One Great Charity Event

The Brewery has a strong charity ethos and works to ensure it supports these where it can. So, when June for One Great Day came about, they wanted to make sure they had a great event to support it. Roll up On-Brand! We worked with The Brewery to create a fun filled Saturday full of fun circus activities from a ringmaster hosting workshop offering rubber duck decorating, circus mask making and wooden spoon crafts. Oh, and let’s not forget the fairground stalls including ball in a bucket, feed the clown, ring on the bull and other retro fun to get involved in.

And the best bit about it? All proceeds went to children’s hospitals and health charities. Our ringmaster also had special ties to the hospital and told us after the event: ‘It was lovely to see all the children having a go at circus skills this weekend at The Brewery.

‘When I was employed as a Clown Doctor at Great Ormond Street, fun and games were so important to the children in their care, and I really enjoyed keeping up with their progress while teaching them new tricks.’

But he wasn’t the only one who had something to add… as they say, only the truth comes out of kids’ mouths so here’s some quotes from them 😊

“This is so much fun, I can’t wait to tell my friends about this at school!” Child, age 6.

“I’m going to keep practicing hula hooping!” Child, aged 7.

The results…

  • Great local PR thanks to articles from The Romford Recorder newspaper.
  • Awareness of the centre grew thanks to articles from mummy bloggers for all three events
  • We secured a newspaper photographer to come down to One Great Day as a result of our press release and contacts!
  • Successful year-on-year footfall growth, using the events to build the brand and its community ethics
  • Social media engagement grew as did reach and reactions
  • Dwell time increased as did kids’ happiness – we can’t really say more than that can we!

Honey, we’re home!

Well, in our new office anyway. Yep. We know we’ve been talking about it for a while, but then we had a moment and realised we hadn’t actually told you all about it, bar the pros and cons of WFH.

So, to give you a little but more insight into it all, here’s everything you need to know including what our new office is like, how to find us and how to have a chat with our teams.

A sustainable space

At OnBrand we take our responsibilities seriously. Not only do we help our clients to shout about and form a strategy for their eco-efforts, we’ve kept this in mind when creating our new office. We’ve added desks made from old scaffold poles and planks for sustainability. Take a look at our wall and you’ll see it’s all reclaimed bricks sliced into wall tiles, while our light fittings are all steampunk recycled. May day, May day, we’ve had a busy month! As if helping out clients didn’t take up the majority of our time – hey, we’re not complaining, we love what we do – we’ve been busy moving (offices) and grooving alongside stilt walkers at events… yep, it’s never a normal month when it comes to OnBrand, but we’d never change it – who wants to be boring!

Here’s some of our top May antics!

Purple Apples awards event

No, it’s not what the evil witch gave Snow White – although we wouldn’t mind being involved in story telling…hint, hint. This annual event celebrates UK shopping centre marketing successes and achievements, celebrating community driven initiatives that inspire and delight shoppers. Hosted by Britain’s Got Talent winners, Diversity, it was a great night. However, our social media manager was not impressed at not getting to give main man Ashley Banjo a hug… apart from that… we loved meeting new people (unfortunately not Ashley) and chatting to old.

Revo South Accessibility day

We an insightful day at the Revo Accessibility Day. This event was all about learning about accessibility in shopping centres and featured some great talks. We were intrigued when we were asked to take part in a Dementia workshop, which involved literally stepping into a sufferer’s shoes – we had to put spiked soles in ours – and feeling and hearing what these people do every day. It was a heart-wrenching, yet amazing experience. And, given that our Director, Daniel, had recently become a Revo South committee member, and helped organize this, we like to think that our events experience shone through when it came to this day.

In addition, we heard from We Are Purple Chief Executive, Mike Adams OBE on exciting updates to Purple Tuesday, happening in November… we’re watching this space already!

When event wishes come true

We stepped into a whole new world when we were asked to put on a half term event for The Brewery Shopping Centre. Making the most of The VUE cinema in the centre, we decided to celebrate the new Aladdin film and bring themed workshops to the community. And all our wishes came true, with happy kids, a great lantern making workshop, mask making and even a stilt walker, who literally stood out above the rest! It was an event of shining, shimmering splendor, even if we do say so ourselves 😊

The big office move!

Well, it finally happened. We moved into our brand-new office in the heart of Saint Albans. We wish you could have seen our faces at the initial reveal! While we learnt a lot about working from home, we’re glad to be settled in our new space. But this isn’t just any office, it’s a sustainable office… We’ve added desks made from old scaffold poles and planks. Take a look at our wall and you’ll see it’s all reclaimed bricks sliced into wall tiles, while our light fittings are all steampunk recycled. Oh, and we’re also saving energy with our low emission energy efficient LED lighting. In the area? Pop in and take a look for yourself.

new onbrand office

Read all about it!

We like to think we know a thing or two about shopping centres and what makes them stand out. So, when we visited DestinationR back in April, we took our new and old learnings from some great speeches and turned them into an article for Retail Destination. We don’t want to give too much away, but we feel that our thoughts around community shopping centres and moving forward were quite innovative! Take a read and see for yourself.

Hear all about it!

We love talking about what we do, so when we were invited by Radio Verulam to talk about our new office space and marketing, we jumped at the chance. It was so lovely to be in the studio and we had lots of fun. We like to think we have great faces for radio 😉 Watch Daniel and Emma’s interview here…

WFH Pros & Cons

By | Blog

After staring in awe at our new office, one of the questions was ‘where do we hang the dressing gowns’?

Nope, we don’t have a fancy spa downstairs – although a gym is coming shortly – we got so used to working from home while the office was kitted out, that our dressing gowns and PJs became our style BFFs…

That’s right, as anyone who is a home worker will tell you, getting dressed in the morning isn’t high on the priority list. And, as many businesses move towards cost savings in deliberately hiring home workers, there’s lots of pros and cons to this. Something we’ve learnt over the past few months of WFH. Here’s some of them.

1. You know EVERYTHING about Jeremy Kyle’s guests

In fact, you become obsessed with it… Because, if you must have noise around you while you work, that’s about all that’s on.

Oh wait, what’s this? Jeremy Kyle is no more! We’re sad to see it leave our screens but as we’re in the midst of Mental Health Awareness Week, and moving forward, we think it’s absolutely the right call by ITV. *Rushes off to check TV times for Escape to the Country and Homes Under the Hammer.

2. The postie’s scared of you

Working from home can be a lonely business and although your workmates are at the other end of Slack or the phone, nothing beats a face to face convo. So, when you spot that postie, you’re going to beg them to come in for a cuppa just so you can tell them all about the latest episode of Jezza or your nan’s illness… yep, if you were on the receiving side, you’d probably run too.

3. You get caught in your PJs

When you get an email from a colleague telling you they’ll give you a call, you assume it’ll be the audio kind. Not in our case. We’re all so Skype happy that when that call comes through, you find yourself on video in said PJs and wearing yesterday’s make-up… and it’s so much worse when it’s your boss on the other end. Now where’s that lip gloss?

4. Things take double the time

An office environment means that a simple question can be answered within seconds. When you’re WFH, it means an email has to be typed, received and then responded to. Now we’re back in the office, we’re so pleased to have the human connection back and an open plan space means those questions get shouted out and answered quick smart.

5. You become much better at connecting

Working from home means you’re going to need tools to talk to your colleagues. And we like to think during our office break, we’ve nailed them. We’ve become experts at Slack, Teamviewer and cloud-based phone systems, which means we’re always available. And let’s not forget all our clouded up files, so we can work anywhere – from home, in a shopping centre or our clients’ offices on an internal doc. And yes, we do get dressed for the latter visits!

So that’s pretty much our findings on WFH and although we loved it for a time, we have to be honest and say that we’re so pleased to be back in an office working creatively as a team. Especially when the office looks as awesome as ours #smugface. Want to pop in and see it? Drop us a line and come and hear what we can offer you in terms of social, audio, event planning and web design!

Speeding up the headache of finding that perfect voice recording artist and delivery

By | Audio, Case Study

The ailment

CIG Healthcare required a speedy cure for a presentation they were hosting about Syndol, a headache relief tablet. The company, which specialises in developing training solutions, e-learning and bespoke education materials for pharmacists and pharmacy teams, approached us to quote them for scripts surrounding their Tackling Headache in the Pharmacy’ training presentation. However, they needed an express way to do this and a voice artist who knew their stuff, while also being able to deliver the recordings with professionalism and tact.

The cure

We usually turn around voice recordings within the standard 5 day SLA. However, we knew the importance of the CIG request so we decided to use our skills and contacts to find that speedy cure. We gave the CIG a range of voice artist samples to select from, made sure that the correct instructions were given to the selected voice artist and stressed the SLA time.

The outlook

Having worked with us previously, our voice artist stuck to the brief and delivered the recordings the next day. We then set about editing these and got them over to the CIG that same day – ahead of the SLA.

That was one headache taken away.

A make-over for Aylesham Shopping Centre

By | Case Study, Digital

The foundations

It’s always good to listen. Not only to clients, but also to their audience. After all, they are the ones who drive the footfall and web visits. And that’s exactly what we did when it came to the
Aylesham shopping centre in Peckham.

The centre had a website and a logo that just didn’t appeal to the current audience. Trying to find information about the centre was also like trying to find a lost needle in a virtual haystack. They knew something had to change, so they called on us to give their branding a shake-up.

A lesson in make-overs

We know how important it is for a community shopping centre to have the support of its local people. So we decided to combine our skills with their feedback. They told us they wanted the new website to reflect their community.

The highlight(er)

From experience we also knew it was essential that customers could easily find centre opening hours, and if the stores at the centre have any offers available. As a result we decided to make this the foundations of the site.

To bring the centre up to date, we also worked on a new logo, to make it current, clean and modern. This branding was reflected throughout the whole site.

And of course, we didn’t ignore the community feedback, adding in a news page and making sure we shouted about about art installations.

The final brush up

The website was a success, not only visually, but also from an SEO perspective. It went from having a zero web presence to appearing in the top 5 of the google search results in under 3 months.

And we also got that all important pat on the back from the client who told us: ‘The site looks great and is very informative. Much thanks to all of the team that have helped put this together.’

We can’t grumble with that!

Guerrilla marketing: The magic pill

By | Case Study, PR

Guerrilla marketing? We’re huge fans of it when it’s the right time and place. And when it came to helping the Pharmacist’s Trade Union (PDAU) get their message out to the right people, it was just what the doctor ordered.

The symptoms

The PDAU was formed by pharmacists to help protect and improve working conditions and employment terms for those in their industry. Its theory, and quite rightly so, is that looking after pharmacists would also help better patient care. PDAU started as a Defence Association and then also became a Trade Union.

It had been at odds since 2012 with a large retailer who employed around 7,000 pharmacists. Pharmacists felt that the company demanded a lot from them and didn’t listen to their concerns and wanted the union to be their independent voice at work. But the company fought this with every resource it could including what was called “disingenuous behaviour” in a court judgement.  After years of dispute, including multiple legal processes the PDAU finally secured the right for a ballot in 2018 for those pharmacists which might force the company to change.

It was an essential process and the union was using a 17 year old legal option which nobody else had ever tried. If they failed they would be prevented from trying again for at least 3 years and if less than 40% of those eligible to vote said “YES”, it would be a failure.

We needed to ensure that we got our message in-front of the right people and enable them to make an informed decision on the ballot and make sure they vote.’ said Paul Day, National Officer at PDAU.

With limited methods of communication the union sought innovative ways to make sure pharmacists were reminded about voting.

The diagnosis

OnBrand’s reputation for creative ideas with slick execution and attention was what attracted them to the PDAU. They felt we’d be just the right medicine to help them in their quest. However, there was a stitch. There was only a week to get communications in front of people before the vote.

The cure

We had to think fast and creatively about how we could do this and reach everyone simultaneously. So we decided the best way to do this was to blue light a letter via couriers to the top 300 stores, reaching the most pharmacists at a place they would receive the message.

The outlook

‘As a result of OnBrand’s quick thinking guerrilla approach, we got documents in the hands of those who mattered. We achieved enough ”Yes” votes, and we believe each action we took contributed to that success.  Alongside our more standard messaging activity the OnBrand approach meant pharmacists won the ballot and we were able to go on to achieve the recognition they wanted.’ said Paul Day

march madness

March Madness… Our awesome stuff

By | Blog

When it comes to being busy, this month has been as mad as a March Hare at OnBrand. And it’s fair to say, we’ve been in a great marketing wonderland – in fact, let’s take it even further and say, our activities here have had us and our clients grinning like Cheshire cats. Ok, that’s enough of the fairytale speak, let’s get real about what we we’re up to…

Here’s just some highlights for March

Competition crazy

March bought us a great range of competitions thanks to some great retailer liaisons – we think our marketing guy Sam deserves a big round of applause for that #justsaying. From Smyths Toys giving away vouchers, MOD Pizza offering free grub and some awesome Mother’s Day treats from Patisserie Valerie in the bag, we like to think of the six comps we launched, there was something for everyone.

Ready to mingle

The OnBrand stand at destination REveryone in the office had been gearing up for the Destination R event in Birmingham happening at the beginning of April. And if we must say, our stand looked pretty great. We loved talking to potential clients, listening to some great speakers, and well, just generally soaking up the great atmosphere and knowledge. And no, there wasn’t any silly dancing from anyone at the end of the awards night…

New website

If comps and exhibitions weren’t enough, we were also pretty busy on our own little project… Drum roll please… The arrival of our new website. Just like the time and care we take to build our clients’ websites, we did the same with ours. It’s been a labour of love full of research and forming a new tone of voice, but we’re pretty pleased with the outcome. Check it out for yourselves…

And one more…

flooringDid you know, we’re moving to St Albans? Yep, we love shopping centres so much, we decided to pitch up our brand new offices in the Maltings Shopping Centre – cool huh! And here’s a little sneak peek of how it’s going… We can’t wait to move in a couple of weeks’ time, although our social media manager will have to be very disciplined not to be out in the shops everyday.
